Katerina Vlantoni (PI) was invited to participate in the “Training School on Bio-Banking on Neutropenias”, which was organized by the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) and the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), as part of the COST-Action EuNet-INNOCHRON (CA18233). The workshop took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, 6-8 April.

The workshop was directed at biobanking practitioners and physicians dealing with Chronic Neutropenias (European Network for Innovative Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Neutropenias). To cover a broad spectrum of biobanking issues, presentations regarding social, ethical and legal issues were also included, leading to very lively amd intriguing discussions.

Vlantoni’s presentation was entitled “Biobanks and biomedical research: expectations and challenges in sociotechnical systems”. She had the opportunity to present a brief outline of the BIO-CONTEXT project and of its objectives. In her talk, she talked about the current issues and challenges in the biobanking sector, alongside with the factors that make biobanks complex sociotechnical systems. The participants reacted positively by sharing their own experiences while running biobanks.
